Project overall objective: Enhancing protection and preservation of nature, biodiversity and green infrastructure, including in urban areas, and reducing all forms of pollution. To identify and apply ecological decontamination options for polluted rural areas (water and soil) in order to support green rehabilitation of zones with recreational potential. |

Study area: The project aims at using biocompatible nanomaterials for enhanced bioremediation of pesticide contaminated soil in paralel with a classical approach to cleaning water bodies from bottom sediments, debris, excess vegetation, silt to restore normal hydrological conditions and improve water quality and cleaning the contaminated areas of the banks and adjacent areas of household waste, excess vegetation and the elimination of unauthorized garbage deposits. The main reason for cross-border cooperation in this project is the similarity of the situation on both sides of the Romanian-Moldovan border, even if the legal regime is different, because in Romania, as an EU member state, stricter environmental regulations are in force, on the one hand. On the other hand, cross-border cooperation allows a small community (Paltinis, Botosani County) to witness first-hand a state-of-the-art approach to land decontamination measures, which will be applied by LP USPEE „Constantin Stere” in the PP2 area (Dereneu). This type of knowledge and exchange of experience is not regularly available for a small rural LPA. |

Activities in Republic of Moldova (LP1 and PP2): Improving local conditions by assessing the situation of anthropogenic pollution of water sources and surrounding lands in the area of Dereneu commune in Calarasi district and applying recommended measures for decontamination of water and soil, in order to ensure a sustainable green recreational area in the commune, capitalizing on existing natural resources. Their set of activities is similar to the activities of partner PP3, but the practical measures will be chosen with the support of professionals and under the scientific supervision of the LPA. |

Activities in Romania (PP3): Improving local conditions by assessing the situation of anthropogenic pollution of water sources and surrounding lands in the area of Paltinis commune in Botoșani county and applying recommended measures for water and soil decontamination, in order to ensure a sustainable green recreational area in the commune, capitalizing on existing natural resources. Their set of activities is similar to the activities of partner PP2, but the practical measures will be chosen with the support of professionals and under the scientific supervision of the LPA. |

| Project Results
Result 1: Joint strategies and action plans taken up by organizations (One pesticide contaminated area decontaminated using nanotechnologies. The Result is consistent with result indicator RCR79: Joint strategies and action plans taken up by organizations being the effect of the implementation of a pilot action) Result 2: Joint strategies and action plans taken up by organizations (Two formerly polluted water bodies and banks cleaned and refurbished according to green and sustainable principles based on the e-Guidelines developed within the project) |

| Lasting effect
The main beneficiaries of the project will be the two rural communities, i.e. Dereneu and Paltinis. The LPAs have the administrative capacity as well as the financial resources to hold and use the outputs of the project during the durability period, i.e. to ensure maintenance of the rehabilitated areas. They are also committed to identify further funding opportunities in order to increase the attractivity of the areas by measures that area nature friendly. LP1 will use the results of the pilot action of using bio-compatible nano-materials for enhanced bio-remediation of pesticide contaminated soil for further research and development of improved nature – based solutions. All project outputs will be available for all interested stakeholders without any limitations. The Guidelines on rehabilitation of rural recreational areas with environmentally friendly methods will be presented to local / regional and even national authorities during the communication events and will be available online after the end of the project. The communication activities are meant to promote the project and its results thus making available to public knowledge what outputs and results are obtained and how they can be used by interested third parties. Reports on results of decontamination / cleaning activities will be available for local / regional decision makers and can support similar interventions in any other rural areas in the border region. Both the type of scientific approach and the awareness activities such as the seminars for the public or the cleaning and landscaping activities are models that can be applied by any organization or partnership interested in environment monitoring, prevention and control of pollution and promotion |

| Output
O1: Guidelines on the ecological rehabilitation of rural areas with recreational potential and pilot decontamination of soil from residual pesticides with an ecological nanobioremediation method. O2: Results understood as changes determined by the project results which include 3 decontaminated areas and refer to the result indicator of the RCR79 program. O3: Common strategies and action plans adopted by the organizations. |
